Resistance: Which Way the Future?
Exhibition 17 November - 5 December Contemporary Urban Centre, The Annex, Liverpool L1 0BS
Tuesday - Saturday: 11am - 6pm, Sundays: 11am - 4pm
Exhibition opens at 2pm on 17 November www.contemporaryurbancentre.org
Created by Liz Crow. Resistance is a national touring moving image installation exploring Aktion-T4, the Nazi mass-murder
programme that led to the death of quarter of a million disabled people. Through the story of Elise, a woman who showed
courage in the face of horror, we bear witness to one of the truly imperfect moments of the last century. Challenging a neglected part of our history whilst raising critical questions for today, Resistance is a disturbing, sometimes chilling work of art.
It is also tender and hauntingly beautiful, delivering hope and a sense of promise for the future. The installation runs for 30
minutes, beginning at quarter past and quarter to every hour. 27th and 28th November : Linked event at
the Bluecoat, School Lane, Liverpool, L1 3BX Telephone: 0151 702 5324 www.thebluecoat.org.uk.

Crossings

Shelley is on the run. 15 and pregnant, she's looking for a way out of the gang. But Shelley's broken the code. We all know you don't do that. In a raging storm she finds shelter on an old ferry boat at Canning dock. But this is no ordinary boat, this is the ghost of the Zong, a notorious slaveship with a murderous history. Shelley steps on board and is swept into the compelling stories of two powerful voices calling her to her future. Women weave the threads of connection from their histories of enslavement. Are they for her or against her and will she ever find a way out?
Director: Paulette Randall
Reviews of Crossings so far...
"Crossings by Julie McNamara, is a stunning piece of work... a fabulous play, a wonderful piece of writing.
The theatrical storytelling, is strong, with powerful performances from all three women, particularly Nadine Wild who plays Shelley."
Liz Porter (Disability Arts Online, Sept. 08)
"Powerfully delivered, beautifully directed and produced . The play is acted out on the bones of the wreck of the haunted ship, where the young pregnant girl Shelley so convincingly played by Nadine Wild-Palmer is sheltering... Margo Cargill powerfully plays the survivor of the Zong and gives a luminous, brilliant and moving performance. Hetty -May Bailey a ghost (within) the play, signs artistically and empathetically adding an anchoring effect to Canning Dock where the Zong is moored. Julie Mc Namara has written a corker of a piece... delivered by her dream team. It went down a storm, with everyone... a tour de force."
Bonny Cummins (DaDa South, October 08)
"Julie MacNamara's new play Crossings... Intense and full of integrity, provoking notions of hidden histories and the ways that women were - and remain - enslaved."
Kaite O'Reilly (Disability Now October 08)

Spastic Fantastic and Unshakeable
Comedy Friday 27 November Tickets £7/ £5, 7.30pm Tullie House Museum, Castle Street, Carlisle, CA3 8TP Telephone: 01228 618718
Laurence flies in the face of a society that seems more concerned with political correctness and language
than actually listening to disabled people. Earlier this year he attempted to reclaim the word ‘spastic' through the power
of stand-up comedy and hidden camera stunts. He says: "Black people, gay men and lesbians have all reclaimed negative terms that were used about them in the past. It's about humour, irony and seizing power by taking ownership of words that were once used destructively". Two of the North West's best comedy performers appearing for one night only! (there will be a 20 minute interval)

It took doctors 18 years to figure out that Paul Betney had Parkinson's Disease. When the diagnosis finally came, the
medication that followed brought his severe tremor under control. This was to be the beginning of a strange journey of self discovery as he slowly came to realise just what the tremor had meant to him and to ask what getting back to ‘normal' really means. Hard hitting, poignant and hilarious, Unshakeable is the amazing true story of how one man's life was dramatically changed by some little yellow pills. Paul Betney started his stand up career in Tokyo. He then spent six months performing in the USA. He has returned to Liverpool and performs throughout the UK.
